Taking Care of Business

October 10, 2012

I inherited this wooden beauty from a family friend when I was in college. I love the vintage vibe and the simplicity of it’s one little drawer. The top is sun-stained after years of living near the window leaving memories of paperwork and business cards. I considered re-staining the entire desk to hide the outlines, but I think it’s sort of quaint.

I keep a stack of homemade envelopes  and postage on hand for letter writing plus a mason jar of sharpies and paintbrushes out all the time.  You never know when the mood’s going to strike!

Holy Snails, Batman.

Yes, this is an entire post dedicated to snails.

Fun fact: I have never seen a snail up close and personal. And now they are EVERYWHERE.

Like climbing up the patio stairs. Cue Rocky theme song.

Or hiding inside/eating our peppers.

“You climbed up the wall and ate the entire inside of a pepper? I’m not even mad, that’s amazing!”

I feel like I should be getting footage for National Geographic or something because these snails are out of control. As a bonus, it’s not every day that you can say you’re seeing something for the first time. What can I say, life has been preeeeeeetty exciting over here.

Rain is a Good Thing

October 3, 2012

Fall is bringing cooler weather and lots of rain our way–which not only means our grass is a rather cheerful green (what??) but it’s also pretty cool even in the middle of the day. Which means: lots and lots of epic bike rides. Yesterday we made the trek to Town Lake by way of the Shoal Creek green belt. If you’ve ever taken this route you know it’s a twisty path under bridges and sometimes through creeks (I felt like Ironman muscling my townie through the water. Super badass.) Totaled, it was about a 20 mile round trip affair, punctuated in the middle by a delicious pit stop at P Terry’s (don’t think I could have made it back up those hills without that milkshake. Mmmmhm).

In summary, rain and bike rides are awesome. Just look at what the rain’s been doing for our little plot of land!

1. With all this rain we’ve been enjoying lately, the grass has been growing like CRAZY. And it’s GREEN instead of a crispy brown color. And with our snazzy reel push mower, I’m not even upset about having to cut it twice a week. 2. Look who decided to join us for lunch? (How often in your adult life do you get to have a “first” ? This little guy is my first snail sighting, ever.) 3. Cruising 6th street. 4. Pecan Street Festival was so fun!

get out of your head

September 26, 2012

I have a confession.

I’m feeling a little overwhelmed with the amount of unfinished projects I have around the house. I wonder if this is a result of my pinterest-obsession–darn those little squares of inspired perfection (ok, the dessert recipes can stay. I love me some homemade pie). I’m realizing more and more that things are rarely ever as perfect as they seem and within this imperfection there’s a certain sense of being unfinished.

Instead of focusing on the making, the crafting, the buying, the searching, and the thinking, I want to switch gears to focus on experiencing, absorbing,  fulfilling, and feeling.

Maybe leaving things unfinished won’t be so bad, after all.
