Dog Days of Summer

July 29, 2012

It’s that time of the summer when you can’t step out the door without colliding with a back-to-school sale. I picked up a few things at the grocery store yesterday and not two yards from their main entrance is a gigantic display of backpacks and pencil boxes. Every other radio commercial proves to be a sad little reminder that the days of summer are coming to a close. As a kid-less gal who works in the medical field, this news doesn’t send little shivers down my spine like it might for families in the business of needing backpacks and pencil boxes but there’s a piece of me that becomes a little nostalgic around this time anyway. (Maybe it’s because I secretively miss the smell of a brand-new box of crayons).

This time of the summer means it’s also time to look back on the list I made at the beginning of the season!

1. Stand-up paddle boarding on Lady Bird Lake

2. Grow lettuce on the patio (We already have a head start on the peppers!)  We grew the crap out of lettuce and peppers in our not-so-little-anymore patio garden. We made omelets with some of the peppers we harvested and the rest went into a homemade hot sauce. We only had one harvest of lettuce because something was trying to eat them, but we’ll be growing it again!

3. Downsize my growing collection of crap things I could probably live without.  With moving right around the corner, making drop-offs to the local goodwill has become a pretty regular occurrence.

4. Get my grill on. M and I have done some grilling so far but I’m looking forward to grilling outside the box (cherry tomatoes and watermelon, anyone??) I can’t count how many late night grilling sessions we had this summer…they’ve been some of my favorite moments of the summer. What’s not to love about cooking over an open flame whilst (yeah I said whilst. It’s adding a level of class to the whole experience, don’t you think?) drinking a cold one while laughing over the day’s events?

5. Take more pictures.   I’m taking more and more pictures specifically for the purpose of blogging about it, which counts at least a little bit. I’d like to get into the habit of bringing my camera with me more often.

6. Start running. Again. For the third time. Ok, maybe it’s really the fourth time…

7. Read more. I have a really bad habit of starting too many books at once and not finishing them. My new goal is to read more books from start to finish.

8. Send some snail mail lovin’ to my friends around the country. I have a set of letters that are waiting to be mailed once we settle into our new address.

Thankfully, summer isn’t completely over….I still have a good couple weeks to finish crossing off this list! What things are you still working on this summer? Any tips for squeezing the last bits of summer out of this season?
