DIY :: Found Object Art

July 19, 2012

Poetry, cork board, acrylic paints, rocks…. It’s the stuff dreams are made of! Dreams that are easy on the pocket, anyway. I picked up this shadow box at my local thrift store and the rest of the craft items were bought at Michaels or already in my arsenal.  The leaf was found while on a walk through the neighborhood and the rocks are from different national parks.  The total project ran under $10.

What you need:
-Shadow box picture frame
-Small token (I used the heart leaf + rocks for this part but it could be anything, really).
-Corkboard sheet (found in the scrapbooking isle)
-Alphabet stickers
-Acyclic paint
-Foam brush
-Glue gun

1. Choose a quote or part of a poem that coincides with your token. Cut out alphabet stickers to spell out your text.
2. Cut your corkboard sheet to fit shadow box picture frame.
3. Arrange alphabet stickers on corkboard sheet. If you’re concerned about the phrase being centered/straight, it might help to trace a line lightly with a ruler to use as a guide then use a toothpick to place the letters.
4. Use foam brush and acrylic paint to cover the corkboard sheet being careful not to over-do it with the paint. It’s best to use a little at first to prevent smearing under the letters. I used a dabbing motion and it worked pretty well.
5. Let the paint set for about a minute or so. Don’t wait too long or it may be difficult to remove the alphabet stickers.
6. Use tweezers to remove the alphabet stickers.
7. Wait a little longer for the paint to completely dry before adhering your token above your phrase using hot glue.
8. Place finished art piece inside shadow box picture frame and hang!
