109 Degrees: The start of a very southern fried summer

June 27, 2012

I heard about these triple-digit weather reports long before spending a summer in Austin — Locals seem to love commiserating about the long stretches of sweltering humidity and the vacant streets undulating under heat waves. Today, the front page of the newspaper boasted a record high of 109 degrees. It’s crazy. Not because it gets that hot, we are pretty near the boarder down here, but crazy because people still RUN in this weather. Outside. In the middle of the day. I can’t wrap my head around it.

Me? I will not be running much this summer, outside or otherwise. I’ll float, though (good trade off, right?)

These were taken on the Comal River–the finest City Tubing Austin’s got to offer (If this were a VH1 special it’d be titled “Tubing Through the Lives of the Rich and Famous” and narrated by Christopher Flockton. Admittedly, we didn’t see any famous people but hot damn, there are some nice properties along that river.) Added bonus: tube shoots and concrete river bottom. Need I say more?

The Guadalupe definitely offers more of a country tubing experience–so you battle with the typical rocky river bottom, low hanging branches, and occasional spots of shallow water — but that water was cold and the good times were rollin’. Added bonus: Ending the day with Ryan Beaver and Randy Rogers at the Whitewater Amphitheater.

What are y’all doing to keep cool this summer?
