down on the patio farm

May 19, 2012

I am, historically, pretty terrible with growing things. I had a cactus in college for a semester or so and even my roommate was surprised when that one bit the dust (seriously, who kills a cactus?) My obsession with house plants paired with a misguided sense of where to place them leads to a long track record of starved flora. So when Mike and I threw some pepper plants on our shaded little apartment patio, we really didn’t have high hopes (let’s best honest, we didn’t even have low hopes). They were watered (irregularly and mostly by Mike) and blown around a lot by our recent storms. When I went to check on them the other morning this is what I found:

Hot damn, we got ourselves some baby peppers!

All of this new growth prompted a different potting strategy. We gave up the ghost on receiving the pickle buckets from the Schlotzsky’s up the road (has anyone had any luck getting free buckets from restaurants?) and ended up buying 3 gallon buckets and some potting soil from the Home Depot.

This post could have also been titled When Bikes Attack (and this is only two of the four five bikes we own. AAAH!)

Juno helped out by tasting all the plants….She reeeeaaallly went to town on these chives.

Ta-dah! The newly replanted peppers (and chives). I made a HUGE mess out there but I love how it’s all coming together. I can’t wait to enjoy our first peppers!

The next step will be finding some chalk markers to label all the plants–Right now we’re working on growing Banana Peppers (two containers), Hot Peppers (two containers), Bamboo, zesty peppers, green bell peppers, and cayenne peppers (we went a little pepper crazy).  If all goes well with these, we’ll try our hand at growing some salad greens (and if I end up with a green thumb in the process it’ll be a crazy miracle).  We decided to jump right in with the lettuce seeds and guess what?? They’re growing, too!! (Can you tell I’m surprised?)

What about you guys: Are you growing anything this summer? Have any tips for a first timer?
