And then we decided to start a patio farm

April 13, 2012

After drooling over pictures like this and this, it was pretty easy to get bit by the garden bug and want to start a little patch of my own. Only issue: I live in an apartment. Oh yeah, and said apartment patio gets less than stellar light exposure. Does this stop me? Nah. It doesn’t look like much at the moment– M and I are only starting with a couple varieties of peppers (we may add lettuce down the line….because hot damn, we eat a lot of salads!) Despite the fact that our little patio doesn’t exactly get six-hours of straight up sun light, M and I decided we’d give the whole urban farming thing a go. There’s a ton of information out there, and from what I came across here are a few of the most detailed and awesome websites on growing your own food:

Life on the Balcony

Urban Organic Gardener

Farm to Table

The Natural Gardener‘s month-to-month guide on what to plant

Garden of Steph

Or you can check out my Patio Farming board on pinterest.

In the next couple days, we’ll have to replant those suckers into bigger containers. M and I went around to a few nearby resturaraunts to ask if they might be willing to donate leftover 5 gallon buckets (a lot of places call these pickle buckets) and had a little bit of luck at Scholotzky’s around the corner (only in so much that they took our information and told us they’d call when they have a few buckets to spare). Word on the street is Pok-E-Jo’s BBQ sell you buckets for about a dollar–so we may be trekking up to Round Rock (because I hear this one has the best stock) soon!
