Birthday Week Highlights

February 3, 2012

Whew! What a week! I have officially decided that every year my birthday festivities will last an entire seven days—sure the time still flies by just as fast and I’m still flabbergasted that I’m 25, but man, it was fun!

Here are a few of the highlights from my crazy wonderful week:

1. M came to Austin! I haven’t seen him since November, so we had a lot of dates to smash into seven days. Let me tell ya, we picnicked the hell out of Austin.

Sushi lunches are the bomb.

Mount Bonnell at sunset.

3. Random Acts of Kindness Birthday Festivity

I spent the first part of my actual birthday dropping off items from APA’s wish list and playing with the puppies—APA has an expansive outdoor play area for the dogs andomigosh, I wanted to take them all home!

We interrupt this regularly scheduled post for a little somethin’ somethin’ about a cause that is close to my heart: The Austin Pets Alive! is a non-profit that saves hundreds of companion animals each month from being euthanized. This amazing organization is working to make Austin a no-kill city—in 2011 alone, APA was responsible for a 58% decrease in pets euthanized by the Austin Animal Center. See more of what’s on the APA wish list by clicking on the link at the bottom of this post.

Along with visiting the shelter, my group of friends bought coffee for the person in line behind us, wrote letters to soldiers fighting overseas, dropped off treats at work, cleaned up litter, handed out care packages to homeless people, and sent my mail person a gift card. One friend who couldn’t make it got in on the action anyway by buying lunch for a family of four on his way to work. I had originally planned to write a more detailed post about this experience, but a) I didn’t take many pictures and b) I feel really strongly that this was more about the doing than the telling. I also feel strongly that kindness shouldn’t be reserved for one day of the year and am going to work on giving back in small ways every day.

4. Birthday Binge at Bess Bistro

Sandra knows what she’s doing—Bess Bistro was such a fun place for a low-key upscale celebration (the place has exposed brick and chandeliers, how can you resist?)
I will definitely be writing more about this restaurant so check back for a full review!

5. Wicked the Musical!

I have wanted to see this musical since it made it’s debut in New York. M and I had seats in the second balcony and I was on the edge the entire time! I haven’t gotten “Defying Gravity” out of my head since.
